The Gift of Discernment

Yesterday I spent time reflecting on the gift of discernment — a topic that is both practical and deeply spiritual. It struck me again how vital this ability is in a world where lies can gain magnitude, where evil can be dressed up to look like good, and where “my truth” is often exalted above God’s truth.

What Is Discernment?

Discernment isn’t just human wisdom or clever judgment. Yes, at a natural level it’s the ability to see things clearly, weigh facts, and make wise decisions. But biblically, it goes much deeper.

The apostle Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 12 that discernment is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit — a supernatural ability to distinguish between good and evil, truth and falsehood, and to recognize the difference between what the Spirit of God initiates and what comes from other spirits.

Hebrews 5:14 reminds us that “solid food belongs to those who are of full age… who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” Discernment isn’t optional for maturity — it’s essential.

Why Discernment Matters

Without discernment, it’s easy to fall for teachings or influences that look good but aren’t of God. John warns us in 1 John 4:1 not to believe every spirit but to test them. Paul echoes this in 2 Corinthians 11:14, showing that even Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light.

Discernment protects us. It helps us test the spirit behind activities, the motivation behind actions, and empowers us to make decisions that align with God’s will.

How the Holy Spirit Guides Us

The Holy Spirit is the primary source of discernment. When the Spirit is at work, there are always clear signs:

  • Jesus is revealed and glorified.
  • God’s Word is confirmed.
  • Human dignity is lifted, not diminished.
  • The fruit of the Spirit (not fear, manipulation, or control) is evident.

Discernment asks us to pause and measure — is this drawing me closer to Christ or away from Him?

Levels of Discernment

Scripture outlines several layers of discernment:

  • Times and seasons (1 Chronicles 12:32, Ecclesiastes 3). Recognizing what God is doing in a particular moment.
  • The work of the Holy Spirit. Learning to follow His lead in life and ministry.
  • Evil spirits. Identifying deception before it ensnares us (Acts 16:17).

Each level deepens our walk, sharpens our awareness, and keeps us on the narrow path.

Walking in Discernment Daily

Discernment isn’t only for spiritual warfare — it shapes how we live, love, and relate. Joshua Selman often reminds us that destiny advancement is tied to relationships. We move at the pace of the right connections. The wrong voices or influences can derail our purpose.

This is why discernment is indispensable in choosing friends, partners, and even the influences we allow into our homes and hearts.

A Final Thought

Discernment is both a gift and a discipline. The Spirit gives it, but we must also exercise it. Romans 12:2 says we are “transformed by the renewing of our mind, that we may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

The question we must continually ask ourselves is simple: Am I becoming more like Christ through this?

That is the ultimate test of discernment.
